The Greek Orthodox community of İstanbul's Yeniköy neighborhood, which traditionally hosts iftar dinners for Muslims fasting during the month of Ramadan, is continuing its iftar program this year.
“Yeniköy is a multicultural neighborhood,” said Laki Vingas, a representative of the community and head of the Minorities Foundation. The Yeniköy Orthodox Community banner wishing all in the area a happy Ramadan is a usual sight for Yeniköy residents. “We also have great participation from our Muslim neighbors at our Easter celebrations,” Vingas said.
He believes that experiencing such events together brings great happiness to those living in the neighborhood. “We have many neighbors who fast during Ramadan, and we also take part in it and attend iftar dinners. We also host iftar dinners. We love doing this. In fact, we are thinking of organizing iftar dinners with minority foundations in Mardin. We always happily attend iftars organized by others and we always eagerly await the Ramadan pide.”
Vingas said Ramadan is a month of compassion and patience. “Ramadan also brings respect to people and communities. These values only have a meaning when we keep them alive. We should help others feel these sentiments,” he added.
